Open source is currently living through its own hype cycle with new projects and foundations popping up on a daily basis. If you're not very active in this space you might think that this phenomenon is great, as it shows the popularity and adoption of the concept. But what does it all mean without participation and collaboration?

In reality many companies and individuals get stuck at the first step of what the term open source suggests, meaning the availability of the source code; for free... However, that is only the preparation step of creating an open source project but it does not guarantee an open source community.

This presentation will focus on the struggles of the current open source ecosystem and suggest solutions to the challenges. Examples include finding long-term contributors and maintainers to mature projects that are running in production. Or, the overly crowded ecosystem, as everyone spins up their own project as opposed to collaborating with others with often very similar initiatives.

The talk is an emphasis on the importance of open collaboration and the responsibility of every actor in the ecosystem. The presentation will highlight the role and responsibilities of individuals, companies and open source foundations and show next steps down the road.
