The F5 Open Source Program Office launched in September 2021. Fast-forward to April 2022, the OSPO grew to a team of 3. Upon arrival, Annania performed analysis of the internal environment at F5 (a multi-cloud application security and delivery company) which showed a complexity requiring a deeper understanding of F5's evolution. In the early days, F5's flagship product was a load balancer called Big-IP which came in a hardware or virtual appliance. In the years since, F5 has undergone a digital transformation leading to the acquisition of several companies (one of which was NGINX ) skilled in microservices, cloud, and SaaS to now offer F5 Distributed Cloud Services. These several acquisitions revealed a rich, yet varying, history of open source engagements. In this session, Annania will share why the creation of an open source ambassador program was prioritized within a small OSPO team with limited capacity to happen sooner rather than later while building the OSPO foundation and unifying internal open source culture and community. This talk will also cover steps it took to launch, lessons learned, pivots, and a vision of what the program will expand to in the future.
